San Diego, CA Cost Guide

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost in San Diego?

Last updated

In San Diego, a single dental implant with the crown usually costs $3,000 to $6,500, and full-arch teeth like All-on-4 typically run $18,000 to $32,000 per arch. With Tijuana a short drive away, San Diego patients also have more ways to compare prices than almost anyone else in the country, which makes it even more important to know what a quote really includes.

This guide covers what dental implants cost in San Diego, what moves the price, how local quotes compare with treatment across the border, and how to read a quote line by line. Want your own number first? Take the free cost calculator at the top of the page. It takes about two minutes.

Why Prices Vary Across San Diego County

San Diego County is big, and implant prices follow the local cost of doing business. Offices in La Jolla, Del Mar and Downtown usually pay more in rent than practices in Chula Vista, El Cajon or Escondido, and that tends to show up in their quotes. Specialist practices with an in-house lab, 3D imaging and a surgeon on staff also charge more than general offices that refer parts of the work out.

A higher price is not automatically better, and a lower one is not automatically a red flag. What matters is what the quote includes, who is doing the work and which materials you are getting. The factors below explain most of the gap.

What Changes the Cost of Your Implants

1. How many teeth you need to replace

One missing tooth usually needs one implant and one crown. Several missing teeth in a row can often be replaced with an implant bridge, where two implants hold three or four teeth. When most or all of the teeth in an arch are missing or failing, full-arch treatment like All-on-4 is usually the best value per tooth.

2. How long the teeth have been missing

Tooth roots keep the jawbone active. After a tooth is lost, the bone underneath begins to shrink, and much of that change happens in the first several months. Replacing a tooth soon often means no extra work. Waiting years, or wearing a denture for a long time, often means bone has to be rebuilt first, which adds cost and healing time.

3. Bone grafting and sinus lifts

If there is not enough bone to hold an implant, it has to be built up first. In San Diego a bone graft usually adds $300 to $3,000 per site, and a sinus lift for upper back teeth adds roughly $1,500 to $5,000 per side. Many patients never need either, especially if they replace a tooth soon after losing it.

Good to know: Full-arch plans that use angled implants, and zygomatic implants for severe bone loss, can often skip grafting. That can lower the total and shorten treatment.

4. Implant brand and quality

Established brands like Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Zimmer Biomet and BioHorizons are backed by decades of research, and their parts are easy to find if you ever need a repair. Some budget implants have far less long-term data, and matching parts can be hard to source years later. San Diego has a lot of military families and people who relocate, so an implant any dentist can service is worth a lot. Always ask which brand is in your quote.

5. Sedation and anesthesia

Single implants are often placed with local anesthetic alone. For several implants, full-arch surgery or anxious patients, offices offer oral sedation, IV sedation or general anesthesia. Sedation run by an oral surgeon or a dental anesthesiologist costs more but includes closer monitoring. Plan on roughly $500 to $3,000.

6. Type of crown or prosthesis

  • Zirconia is very strong, resists chips and stains and looks natural. It is the premium choice and can add several thousand dollars per arch over acrylic.
  • Porcelain or porcelain fused to metal is a durable middle option for single crowns and bridges.
  • Acrylic hybrid teeth cost less up front but wear faster and often need replacing in 5 to 10 years.

The lab and the dentist designing your teeth matter as well. Custom shade, shape and bite work costs more and usually looks and feels better.

7. Number of implants in a full arch

Each implant adds surgical time and parts, so All-on-6 costs more than All-on-4. See the comparison below.

8. Extractions, scans and planning

Teeth that need to come out first add to the cost, especially surgical extractions. Good planning uses a 3D cone beam CT scan, digital impressions and often a printed surgical guide. Some San Diego offices include all of this in one price and others bill each piece separately.

9. Provider experience

Oral surgeons, periodontists, prosthodontists and trained general dentists all place implants. Specialists and high-volume full-arch teams often charge more, but they handle complex cases in-house and tend to see fewer complications.

All-on-4, All-on-6 and All-on-X in San Diego

Full-arch implants replace an entire upper or lower set of teeth with a fixed bridge that stays in. You do not take it out at night like a denture. The name tells you how many implants hold it.

A full-arch bridge replaces every tooth in the upper or lower jaw.

All-on-4

Four implants per arch, with the back two angled to make the most of existing bone. It is usually the most affordable fixed option and often avoids grafting. In San Diego, All-on-4 typically costs $18,000 to $32,000 per arch.

All-on-6

Six implants per arch spread the bite across more support and leave a backup if one implant ever has a problem. It needs more bone and usually costs $24,000 to $40,000 per arch.

All-on-X

The implant count is matched to your anatomy, often four to eight. Patients with major bone loss may get zygomatic or pterygoid implants. Full mouth treatment for both arches in San Diego often runs $36,000 to $70,000 or more.

Dental Implants in Tijuana vs San Diego

Tijuana is about 20 minutes from Downtown San Diego, and its implant clinics advertise heavily to people on this side of the border. Headline prices there are often lower, and some clinics do excellent work. Before you decide, it helps to look past the first number:

  • Count the visits. Implants usually take several appointments over 3 to 6 months. Border wait times can turn a short appointment into most of a day.
  • Plan for follow-up. Adjustments, repairs and any complications may mean more trips, or paying a San Diego dentist to fix the work.
  • Ask about the implant brand. If a local dentist ever needs to service your implant, parts from a major brand are much easier to get.
  • Get everything in writing. Compare a complete written treatment plan, including the final teeth material, against a San Diego quote for the same plan.
  • Know your protections. Licensing, patient protections and warranty terms work differently in Mexico.

For some patients the savings are worth it. For others, being able to drive to the office in 15 minutes when something feels off is worth the difference. Either way, compare the full cost, not just the first quote.

How to Compare Dental Implant Quotes

Ask every office to list exactly what is included. A complete quote covers:

  • The exam, 3D CT scan and treatment plan
  • Any extractions
  • Bone grafting or a sinus lift, if needed
  • The implants, with the brand named
  • Abutments and the final crown, bridge or full-arch teeth, with the material named
  • Temporary teeth while you heal
  • Sedation
  • Follow-up visits and any warranty

If two quotes are far apart, compare them line by line. The difference is usually the teeth material, the implant brand or something left out.

Insurance, Military Plans and Ways to Pay

Many dental plans cover part of implant treatment, such as extractions, the crown or part of the implant, up to the yearly maximum. Most annual maximums are $1,500 to $2,500, so splitting treatment across two plan years can let you use two maximums.

San Diego is home to one of the largest military communities in the country. If you or your family are covered by a military dental plan, ask the office to check what your plan pays toward implant treatment before you schedule. Most implant offices in San Diego also work with patient financing companies that offer monthly payment plans, and HSA or FSA funds can be used for eligible treatment.

Dental Implant Cost FAQ: San Diego

How much is one dental implant in San Diego?

A single implant with the abutment and crown usually costs $3,000 to $6,500 in San Diego. Bone grafting, extractions or sedation are added if your case needs them.

How much does All-on-4 cost in San Diego?

All-on-4 in San Diego typically costs $18,000 to $32,000 per arch, or about $36,000 to $64,000 for upper and lower. Zirconia teeth sit at the higher end.

Is it cheaper to get dental implants in Tijuana?

The upfront price is often lower, but several visits, border wait times and follow-up care can narrow the gap. Ask about the implant brand and who handles repairs before deciding.

Why do implant prices vary so much in San Diego?

Office rent, staffing and lab costs differ a lot across the county. Practices in high-rent areas and specialist offices with in-house technology usually charge more.

Does military dental insurance cover implants?

Coverage depends on the specific plan. Ask the implant office to verify your benefits so you know your out-of-pocket cost before treatment starts.

Do I need a bone graft before getting implants?

Not always. It is more likely if teeth have been missing for a long time, you have worn a denture for years, or you lost teeth to gum disease. A 3D scan will show how much bone you have.

How long does the implant process take?

Many patients get the implant and temporary teeth the same day, then the final teeth about 3 to 6 months later. Grafts or a sinus lift can add a few months.

How long do dental implants last?

The implant can last a lifetime with good care. Crowns and bridges usually last 10 to 20 years or more, and zirconia tends to last the longest.
